We are a melting pot. A mixture of cultures, ideas, values, beliefs, religions. Our differences make us unique and ought make us the greatest country on earth as we draw together as a community for the greater good of our society.
We ought celebrate our similarities, respect our differences, and strive to uphold the highest ideal of the dignity of the human person.
Yet in our politics, our news, our media we have celebrated division and violence. We drive wedges of gender, race, religion, and sexuality between us. We respond in violence to that which is different than ourselves.
I wonder how much of this has to do with the pervasive narcissism we have succumbed to. How much of this is lead by the extreme reactions to a cultural shift demanding a shattering of old bondage rooted in division in exchange for equality?
This sick violence has to end. Enough is enough.
It can only end, however, when we seek to honor the dignity of others. The Moralism proposed by the Right is not enough; it doesn’t work. It is divisive and cruel. When we hold those around us in the same regard as we hold ourselves; when we honor the greatest of commandments, to love the Lord God with all we are, and love our neighbors as we love ourselves, only then will the madness end.
And this sickness has to end.
