An Open Letter to the Developers of the Classic World of Darkness Games

To The Developers of the Classic World of Darkness Games,

Kith-pookaI’m a survivor of an abusive upbringing, broken home, and severe depression. I still struggle with depression and PTSD.

I’m about to turn 33 soon, and this would not have been possible if not for the influence of the classic World of Darkness. Changeling the Dreaming (especially), Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf the Apocalypse, Hunter the Reckoning, and the rest of the classic World of Darkness game and fiction lines saved my life.

I know I’ve said this before, but tonight is nostalgic, and I owe you a direct thank you.

These games, and the small troupe I played with, helped me through extremely difficult times. Being a part of the classic World of Darkness allowed me to find an anchor to hold fast to when I wanted nothing more than to leave this world behind me. There were more than a few nights when I thumbed anxiously through one of these rule books, or struggled to read another short story in one of your incredible anthologies, instead of finally opening up my wrist to see what was inside.

Maybe it was the story, or the metaphor, or the parallels, or the temporary escape from my own world of darkness, but something about those incredible stories made life worth holding onto.

Thank you. Thank you so much.

I can say it enough.

Sincerely,

Z.
