The Three Unicorn Sisters: A Re-Telling of the Three Billy Goats Gruff

While away from family on travel, I wrote a re-telling of the classic story “Three Billy Goats Gruff” for my girls. I recorded myself telling the story on video using puppets I had made and sent it home to the family. The girls loved it, and it really helped to keep us close while I’ve been away. Here is that story.

A Re-Telling of the Three Billy Goats Gruff

Once upon a time there were three unicorn sisters who lived in a magical forest filled with many delicious apple trees. For many years they lived happily in their forest eating all the yummy apples they could find. Sadly, after a time, the apple trees all became very sick and died leaving the unicorns nothing to eat in the forest.

“I’m so hungry!” said the youngest of the unicorn sisters. “If we don’t find any apples soon, we’ll wither away into nothingness!”

“We’ll Find apples, sister. Don’t worry! You must be strong!” said the middle unicorn sister.

As the youngest and the middle unicorn sisters mused and hoped for their next meal of delicious apples, the eldest of the three emerged from a thicket of trees prancing with much excitement.

“Sisters! I have found our answer!” the eldest began. “Just beyond the mountain path to the east there is a great and magical forest filled with more apple trees than we have ever seen in all our lives!”

“What about the sickness that struck our forest?” asked the middle unicorn sister.

“Yeah! Has it taken the forest on the other side of the mountain as well?” the youngest chimed in.

“No sisters. The faeries of the forest speak of a wicked witch who has come to live in our forest. Her presence has caused the forest to become very sick. So we must journey across the mountain pass where we may regain our strength and one day return to face the wicked witch!”

The sisters agreed and one by one they left the forest to journey through the mountain pass.

The youngest unicorn sister was the first to leave. As she journeyed through the mountain pass a dragon jumped out and stood before her.

“Clip-clop? Clip-clop? Who is that clip-clopping through my pass?” The dragon grumbled.

“It is only I, a tiny unicorn. Please dragon, may I journey through this pass? I must get to the other side where there are plenty of apples to enjoy.”

“No! For you look scrumptious and I am going to gobble you up!”

“No-no Mr. Dragon! You don’t want to eat me, for I am small and bony compared to my older sister. She is travelling this way and will make a much better meal than I.”

“Hmmmm…” the dragon considered. “Perhaps. Yes. Be on your way! I hear a better meal is on its way.”

“Oh thank you Mr. Dragon! You won’t regret this!” And the youngest unicorn sister continued on her journey until she found the magical forest on the other side of the pass.

Soon after the middle unicorn sister journeyed along the mountain pass. As she made her way the dragon leaped out before her.

“Clip-clop? Clip-clop? Who is that clip-clopping through my pass?” The dragon grumbled.

“It is only I, a little unicorn. Please dragon, may I journey through this pass? I must get to the other side where there are plenty of apples to enjoy.”

“No! For you look scrumptious and I am going to gobble you up!”

“No-no! You don’t want to eat me. I am small and bony compared to my oldest sister. She is travelling this way and would make a great feast for you!”

“Hmmm…a feast you say?” The dragon greedily licked his chops. “Perhaps. Yes. Be on your way! I hear a feast is on its way.”

“Oh thank you dragon! You won’t regret this!” And the middle unicorn sister continued on her journey until she found the magical forest on the other side of the pass.

It wasn’t long until the oldest of the unicorn sisters was making her way through the mountain pass. As she journeyed deeper through the pass the dragon leaped out in front of her.

“Clip-clop? Clip-clop? Who is that clip-clopping through my pass?” The dragon grumbled.

“It is only I, a unicorn from the forest. Please dragon, may I journey through this pass? I must get to the other side where there are plenty of apples to enjoy.”

“No! For you look scrumptious and I am going to gobble you up!”200_s

“Is that so?”

“Uh-huh!”

“You think so?”

“Yep!”

“As you wish.”

The eldest of the unicorn sisters let out a snort and pawed the dirt. She lowered her head and charged the dragon. She hit the dragon so hard that he was thrown high into the air, so high that he flew right out of sight.

The eldest unicorn let out a sigh and a cheeky grin knowing her sisters had outsmarted the dragon and set him up for disaster. She continued through the pass until she reached the other side where she found her sisters excitedly waiting. Together they entered the magical forest and found many new friends and plenty of apples to enjoy.
